Catch-Up or Clean-Up? How to Tell What Your Books Really Need
Not all bookkeeping messes are the same — and honestly, most small business owners don’t know which kind they’ve got. That’s okay. My job is to help you figure it out and get your books back where they belong: up to date, accurate, and stress-free.
Catch-Up Bookkeeping
If your books are behind, this is where we start.
You might have months (or even a year) of transactions sitting in the bank feed waiting to be categorized. Maybe payroll didn’t get entered, or you haven’t looked at a financial report since last tax season.
Catch-up bookkeeping is all about getting current — entering what’s missing, reconciling your accounts, and bringing everything to today so you can finally see a clear financial picture.
You probably need a Catch-Up if:
You haven’t entered or reconciled transactions in 3–6 months (or longer).
You’re missing reports you need for taxes or management decisions.
Payroll or owner draws aren’t showing up correctly.
You’re not sure how much money you actually made this year.
Clean-Up Bookkeeping
Now, this is for when your books are up to date… but something just doesn’t look right.
Your reports don’t make sense, your categories are all over the place, or totals don’t match your bank statements.
Cleanup is about untangling what’s already there — fixing mis-categorized expenses, organizing your chart of accounts, and making sure your numbers actually tell the truth about your business.
You probably need a Clean-Up if:
You’ve got duplicate categories like “Meals,” “Dining,” and “Food.”
Income from different services is lumped together.
Balances in “clearing” or “uncategorized” accounts never go away.
Reports make your eyes cross instead of making sense.
Sometimes You Need Both
Honestly? Most clients do.
If you’re both behind and disorganized, the fix comes in two steps:
Catch up first so everything’s entered.
Clean up next so everything’s accurate.
Once we do that, your ongoing bookkeeping becomes a breeze — and you’ll finally trust the numbers staring back at you.
